Summary Description: Study to determine what flows from Hungry Horse and Kerr Dams are necessary to optimize kodanee spawning & rearing in the Flathead River Basin. A number of tributaries were evaluated.
Background: The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks needed to determine what flows from Hungry Horse and Kerr Dams were necessary to optimize spawning, incubation, and rearing conditions for kokanee in the upper Flathead River and the lake, while minimizing adverse impacts on power production. This project is also given the erroneous number of 81S-05 on certain publications.
Milestones: Researchers monitored the timing and distribution of kokanee runs in the Flathead River to determine how controlled flows affect reproduction and survival of kokanee in the portions of the Flathead River above Flathead Lake, and how discharges from Kerr Dam affect kokanee spawning and incubation in the lake. In addition a number of Flathead River tributaries and associated lakes were also evaluated relative to habitat and kokanee usage. This project began in FY 1981 and was completed December 31, 1989.
