Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 198331600

COLUMBIA RIVER WHITE STURGEON STUDY

Location: COLUMBIA RIVER BASIN basin, including sites listed below.
COLUMBIA RIVER, COLUMBIA RIVER, COLUMBIA RIVER ESTUARY, ICE HARBOR RESERVOIR (LAKE SACAJAWEA), JOHN DAY RESERVOIR, KOOTENAI RIVER [ID], KOOTENAI RIVER [MT], LAKE ROOSEVELT, MC NARY RESERVOIR (LAKE WALLULA), SNAKE RIVER, VANCOUVER LAKE.

Summary Description: Investigation of the responses of young sturgeon to changes in temperature, flow, etc. Study of potential for artificial propagation and genetic distinction between populations.

Background: The construction and operation of the Columbia River hydroelectric facilities have altered the habitat and behavior of white sturgeon. A multi-year study is necessary for proper management of the species and its environment.

Milestones: Research focused on the responses of young sturgeon to changes in temperature, flow, and other variables. It also addressed the potential for artificial propagation and identification of genetic distinction between populations. Continued genetic determinations for sturgeon stocks. The project was completed in 1987.

Results: Some impact of dam operation on white sturgeon were determined. The results will be used to develop sturgeon protection, mitigation, and enhancement measures. Early life history requirement will be used by managers to assess availability of sturgeon habitat. Genetic distinctions will be used by managers to select the right stocks for enhancement programs.
