Summary Description: Evaluation of habitat and fisheries of Kootenai River Tributaries. A large number of tributaries were evaluated both above and below Libby Dam. Determine Kootenai instream flows necessary to ensure successful migration, spawning & rearing of trout.
Background: The construction and operation of Libby Dam interfered with access to Kootenai River tributaries (above and below the dam) used by migrating resident fish populations.
Milestones: A large number of tributaries of the Kootenai river were evaluated for fisheries and habitat both above and below the Libby Dam. This project determined the instream flows necessary to ensure successful migration, spawning, and rearing of cutthroat and rainbow trout in five tributaries of the Kootenai River and six tributaries of Lake Koocanusa. Minimum flows for trout production were determined. MDFWP requested these flows from the State Water Board. Completed 06/88.
Results: Status of tributary stream fisheries. Minimum flows for resident fish.
