Summary Description: Assessed the status of kokanee in Lake Pend Oreille before and after fish were stocked from the Cabinet Gorge Hatchery.

Background: The goal of the project is to evaluate the contribution of kokanee production at Cabinet Gorge Hatchery to the Lake Pend Oreille kokanee population and fishery. The project should determine which fry release strategies provide the best fry survival and subsequent returns to the fishery and spawner escapement; and optional hatchery production levels to maximize kokanee abundance in Lake Pend Oreille while maintaining satisfactory fish size in the catch. The project was designed to assess the status of kokanee in Lake Pend Oreille before and after fish were stocked from the Cabinet Gorge Hatchery.

Milestones: Hatchery contribution to fish harvest and the effects of kokanee stocking on the zooplankton community were measured. By 1989 the hatchery contribution to catch had increased to 50 percent. Survival of hatchery fish had increased to 25 percent. By 1991 hatchery production had not increased for 2 years because of poor spawning escapement. However, the fish stocked from the hatchery continued to contribute over 50 percent of the kokanee population. There was concern that increased lake trout populations along with the Mysis shrimp may eventually lead to a collapse of the kokanee population in Lake Pend Oreille in spite of the hatchery supplementation. The project was completed in 1992.
