Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 198740700

NEZ PERCE DWORSHAK MODEL FOR RAINBOW TROUT & BASS

Location: CLEARWATER basin, including sites listed below.
DWORSHAK RESERVOIR, OROFINO.

Summary Description: Assess losses of resident fishery at Dworshak Dam. Study rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. Gather physical & biological data for M&E; of impacts from Dworshak operations. Apply data to formulate biological/integrated rule curves. See also 8709900.

Background: The study is designed to assess the impacts of the original construction and current operation of Dworshak Dam on the resident fishery, speecifically rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. This project functions in conjunction with 8709900.

Milestones: The Nez Perce identified critical uncertainties in managing this fishery. Continued study designs to assess population, and age and growth determinations of resident fishery at Dworshak reservoir. C-14 and primary productivity studies were also undertaken. Assisted EIS on resident fish work group of Systems Operation Review (SOR). Continued monthly creel census, food studies, fish population samplings, and age and growth determinations.Obtained current data base for fish stocks (rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and forage species) in Dworshak Reservoir. Formulation of protection, mitigation, and enhancement opportunities for these fish stocks; Established food habits of rainbow trout, population dynamics and habitat preferences of smallmouth bass, and the status of other forage species. Electrofishing in selected areas to augment population data of rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and forage species. Assess status of forage species such as redside shiners and crayfish. Analyze data to determine impacts of reservoir operation on smallmouth bass. Contract 1987BI35165 was completed and closed 1998. Work on this project was transferred to Master Contract 1997AM30423 task order 1997AT34029.

Results: The results of this study and that of BPA Project 8709900, including fishery management recommendations, were combined in a comprehensive reservoir management plan in 1991.
