Summary Description: Determine genetic characteristics of Westslope cutthroat trout of the Coeur d'Alene Reservation. Design, construct, and operate trout hatchery

Background: Resident trout production facilities that provide off-site mitigation for reduced anadromous fish populations have been a part of the Fish and Wildlife Program since 1987. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe Trout Production Facility is intended to rear and release westslope cutthroat trout into rivers and streams with the express purpose of increasing the numbers of fish spawning incubating and rearing in the natural environment.

Milestones: Contract 1998BI14513 for $661,781 was put in place in 1998. The objectives have been as follows: 1. Complete the master plan. 2. Determine the genetic characteristics of Westslope Cutthroat trout oppupying the waters of the Coeur d'Alene Reservation. 3. Complete NEPA on proposed action. 4. Develop preliminary designs and costs of the supplementation facility. 5. Determine short list of acceptable hatchery site locations. 6. Coordinate with appropriate agencies involved. 1999 Completed hatchery Master Plan. Completed hatchery NEPA process. Completed genetic analysis of cutthroat trout in reservation waters.
