Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 199101900

HUNGRY HORSE FISHERIES MITIGATION

Location: FLATHEAD SUBBASIN basin, including sites listed below.
CRESTON NFH, HUNGRY HORSE DAM, HUNGRY HORSE RESERVOIR.

Summary Description: Coordinates the production program for Kokanee and native trout hatchery production to mitigate losses at Hungry Horse Dam. Focus on kokanee salmon, bull trout, and cutthroat trout.

Background: A fish culture program to mitigate for losses caused by construction and operation of Hungry Horse Dam was needed. Efforts were to be concentrated on kokanee salmon, bull trout and cutthroat trout. Improvements to the Creston NFH were to be identified and funded.

Milestones: Initiated in 1992 after the Draft Hungry Horse Resident fish mitigation plan was adopted by the NPPC. The Implementation Plan was approved in 1993. Mitigates for effects of construction of Hungry Horse Reservoir. This was is an interim program funded annually until negotiation of the Montana Fish Trust was completed. Bull Trout incubation and rearing research underway for two years. Kokanee eggs procured: '92, '93', 94'. Captive kokanee brood produced 3 million eggs in 1994. Kokanee planted in Flathead Lake, '93=200K, '94-800K.. The '95 Kok plant amounted to 502K Five year test started. Mid-way through test. Over 1000 samples for GSI have been collected and analyzed of the Flathead BT genetic profile. Contract 1992AI42887 was completed and closed as of 1997

Results: Lake trout were consuming a large number of planted Kokanee. See M/E rpt.('93-94BY 93 and 408 BY 94. Early (very) results of the cooperative monitoring w/ CSKT indicates that the LKT predation much reduced. Project Ldr. completed a paper titled, " Exper. BT Hatchery Progress Rpt '93-94). Furuc has surfaced in the captive brood.
