Location: FLATHEAD SUBBASIN basin, including sites listed below.
FLATHEAD LAKE.
Summary Description: Monitor changes in the fish community of Flathead Lake to verify responses to Hungry Horse Dam Mitigation measures. Evaluate ways to reintroduce kokanee to Flathead Lake and measure success of kokanee reintroduction. Develop stream restoration projects.
Background: This is a cooperative project on monitoring the effects of the Hungry Horse Reservoir Mitigation Plan with MDFWP and USFWS.. Beginning in 1995, this program included Project No. 9500400 (Libby Mitigation Plan), which is a program for development of a Plan for NPPC adoption (Section 10.3B1).
Milestones: This project was initiated in 1992 after NPPC adopted Hungry Horse Mitigation Plan (November 1991, see NPPC program:10.3A.10). Implementation as per NPPC direction upon adoption of Hungry Horse Implementation Plan (March 1993, see NPPC program:10.3A.11). Cooperation with MFWP and USFWS to monitor program results. Habitat improvement projects accomplished jointly with Polson MacAttack Committee, (structural enhancement), and City of Polson (stream restoration). Flathead Lake and river creel census was completed. This provided the baseline information needed for the M/E program. Status of fishery in Flathead Lake will be measured for later comparison after mitigation program is emplaced. 1998 Implementation: Channel reconstruction in Skidoo Creek to allow passage of fish through a culvert barrier. Planning: Progress Report summarizing data collected in Dayton Creek for the purpose of identifiing restoration priorities. Monitoring: Completion of six months of the yearlong Flathead Lake Creel survey. Monitoring: Annual summary report of monitoring of the results of the kokanee supplementation experiment.
Results: Lkt were consuming a large number of planted Kokanee. See 9101900 since this is a cooperative project. Fortunately this has been reduced.
