Summary Description: Determine the status of the fishery in Flathead River above Flathead Lake as a baseline for future mitigation projects. Install instream structures in Coal, Hay, & Elliot Creeks.
Background: Information was needed on the status of fishery and fishermen preference in Flathead River above Flathead Lake. Such information would be used to measure success of upcoming mitigation projects.
Milestones: Status of fishery in Flathead Lake was measured for later comparison after mitigation program is emplaced. Project provided baseline information. Installed erosion control structures in Coal Creek and Hay Creek. Developed mechanism to remove fence from spawning grounds. Installed spawning habitat structures in Elliot Creek. Creel work, fish census, and fisherman interviews were held.
Results: Status of fish stocks and fishermen preference will be used to make management decisions and evaluate success of fisheries mitigation, stream habitat improvements.
