Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 199104700

SHERMAN CREEK HATCHERY - O&M;

Location: UPPER COLUMBIA MAINSTEM basin, including sites listed below.
LAKE ROOSEVELT, LAKE ROOSEVELT, SHERMAN CREEK, SHERMAN CREEK HATCHERY, SPOKANE TRIBAL HATCHERY.

Summary Description: Establish a kokanee broodstock for future egg requirements; create and enhance the kokanee fishery within Lake Roosevelt and assist in rainbow trout rearing through the use of net pen operations on Lake Roosevelt.

Background: This project provides for operation and maintenance of kokanee hatchery on Sherman Creek, tributary to Lake Roosevelt. Operating in conjunction with the Spokane Tribal Hatchery, the Sherman Creek facility will provide for adult capture, spawning, and imprinting. Fish will be released into Lake Roosevelt for development of a recreational fishery. Sherman Creek Hatchery was designed to rear 1.7 million kokanee fry for acclimation & imprinting during the spring, and to trap all available adults during the fall for collection and spawning operations. Since the start of the Lake Roosevelt project, the operating plans have been modified to better achieve program goals. These changes in strategies have been the result of recommendations through the Lake Roosevelt Hatchery Coordination Team and were implemented primarily to: enhance imprinting, improve survival and operate the two kokanee facilities more effectively. These have been in the form of changes to the yearly operating plans of both Sherman Creek and Spokane Tribal hatcheries..

Milestones: Since start of operations 4/92, the following numbers of fish have been released into Lake Roosevelt:1992 - 976,925 fingerling kokanee, 45,714 yearling kokanee1993 - 902,749 fingerling kokanee, 85,321 yearling kokanee 1994 - 946,762 fingerling kokanee, 126,159 yearling kokaneeFall of 1994 will result in returns from summer 1992 kokanee releases into Sherman Creek, with repeat of this scenario for subsequent years In addition, SCH reared 10,000 kokanee captive broodstock during 1993 & assisted in Spokane Hatchery & Lake Roosevelt Development Association in production of 100,000+ yearling rainbow trout annually at Kettle Falls Net Pen site. Contract 2000AP21518 for $550 was issued in 2000. It provided for inspection of the sherman Creek Hatchery residence inspection. The contract was completed in 2000.

Results: Production of kokanee for release into Lake Roosevelt.
