Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 199501600

GENETIC INVENTORY - WESTSLOPE CUTTHROAT TROUT

Location: CLEARWATER basin, including sites listed below.
CLEARWATER RIVER, NORTH FORK, DWORSHAK RESERVOIR.

Summary Description: Conduct a genetic inventory of westslope cutthroat trout in the North Fork Clearwater River Drainage to determine the genetic status, including the extent of introgression by introduced rainbow trout.

Background: Hybridization with exotic trout is considered the greatest threat to the conservation of the native westslope cutthroat trout in northern Idaho and western Montana. Although several studies have determined that genetically pure populations of westslope cutthroat trout remain in less than 2.5% of the historic range in Montana, little genetic sampling has been done in Idaho. The NPPC approved the authorizing measure for project 9501600 based on recommendations from project 8740700. Authorization of this project by the NPPC required interagency consultation and concurrence with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, National Marine Fisheries Service, Bonneville Power Administration, Bureau of Reclamation and Corps of Engineers.

Milestones: Determine genetic purity 12/95. est baseline monitoring 9/96 assess stocking activities. Contract 1995BI61768 for $183,782 was issued in 1995. Mod 1 in 1996 was a no-cost time extension. Mod 2 was a no-cost time extension in 1997. The contract was completed and closed in 1999.
