WARM SPRINGS TRIBE CRAYFISH STUDY

Location: DESCHUTES SUBBASIN basin, including sites listed below.
LAKE BILLY CHINOOK.

Summary Description: Determination of the basic biology and annual harvest potential for crayfish in Lake Billy Chinook.

Background: Objectives: To determine the basic biology and annual harvest potential for crayfish in the three arms of Lake Billy Chinook (LBC). 1. To document the historic yield and management practices for crayfish in LBC. 2. To determine the sex and the size and age composition of the crayfish population in LBC. 3. To determine the size and age at maturity and the growth rate of crayfish in LBC. 4. To determine the fecundity and the time of breeding and hatching of crayfish in LBC. 5. To determine the seasonal movements of the crayfish within and between the three arms of LBC. 6. To estimate the biomass and annual yield (production) of the crayfish in each of the three arms of LBC. 7. To determine the incidence of parasites and diseases in the crayfish in LBC. 8. To determine the habitat types that support the principal populations of crayfish in LBC. 9. To assess the ecological significance of crayfish in LBC, especially with regard to smallmouth bass and bull trout. 10. To recommended management strategies for the commercial, Indian, and recreational fisheries for crayfish in LBC..
