Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 199700400

RESIDENT FISH ABOVE CHIEF JOE & GRAND COULEE DAMS

Location: UPPER COLUMBIA MAINSTEM basin, including sites listed below.
COLUMBIA RIVER BASIN, COLUMBIA RIVER BASIN.

Summary Description: Plan and develop common resident fish methodologies and data basess for use in the 'blocked area' or that region now closed to salmon because of Chief Joseph, Grand Coulee and other dams. Assess the status of all 39 resident fish species.

Background: This project would develop measurable objectives for fish species currently lacking biological objectives in the blocked area and adhere to those objectives currently in section 10.8B of the NPPC Program. Related projects include the following: 9104600 Spokane Tribal Hatchery (Spokane Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9104700 Sherman Creek Hatchery (Spokane Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9500900 Lake Roosevelt Net Pen Project (Spokane Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9001800 Habitat Improvement Project (Colville Confederated Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9501100 Chief Joseph Kokanee Enhancement Project (Colville Confederated Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9402900 Colville Tribal Hatchery O & M (Colville Confederated Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9204800 Hellsgate Big Game Winter Range (Colville Confederated Tribe Wildlife Project) 9502700 Lake Roosevelt Sturgeon Project (Spokane Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9106000 Kalispel-Pend Oreille Wetlands Acquisition (Kalispel Related Projects: Tribe Wildlife Project) 9990059 Yellow Perch Aquaculture Facility (Kalispel Tribe Resident Fish Project) 9500100 Kalispel Tribe Resident Fish (Kalispel Tribe Resident Fish Project) N/A Colville Tribal Hatchery (Colville Confederated Tribe Resident Fish Project)

Milestones: Compile data by a standardized method and complied into a standardized database such as GIS. Assess the status of all 39 resident fish species known to exist in the blocked area. Investigate interactions between species and habitats. Recommend and implement management actions for blocked area fisheries based on investigations. Accomplishments: 1997 Coordinated methods for blocked area fisheries assessments. Formalized blocked area coordination group represented by the Kalispel Natural Resource Department, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Spokane Tribe or Indians, and Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Draft MOA. 1998 Constructed data storage and analysis system. Box Canyon Reservoir migratory salmonid progress report. Spokane River assessment, previously collected data, data gaps, recommended research. Known Blocked Area fish distribution analysis based on previously collected data.
