Location: LOWER SNAKE MAINSTEM basin, including sites listed below.
SNAKE RIVER, SNAKE RIVER.
Summary Description: Evaluate the need and identify potential measures for protecting and rebuilding sturgeon populations conducive to subsistence harvest between Lower Granite and Hells Canyon Dam. This project was original a part of 8605000.
Background: The development of the Columiba River Basin hydroelectric system has created numerous impoundments and severely restricted movements of the white sturgeon and two of their principle food sources, eulachon and lamprey, and degraded or destoyed sturgeon spawning and rearing habitat. This has severely impacted sturgeon populations and some may face extinction.
Milestones: Identify reproductive and life history characteristics of white sturgeon in the Snake River between Lower Granite and Hells Canyon Dam. Identify and quantify habitat used for spawning and rearing in this portion of the Snake river. Evaluate the need and identify potential measures for protecting and rebuilding sturgeon populations conducive to subsistence harvest between Lower Granite and Hells Canyon Dam.
Results: None identified.
