Fish and Wildlife Project Summary

Project 199701900

STINKING WATER SALMONOID PROJECT

Location: MALHEUR SUBBASIN basin, including sites listed below.
MALHEUR RIVER, MIDDLE FORK, STINKINGWATER CREEK.

Summary Description: Study life history of Redband and bull trout in the Middle Fork Malheur River and tributaries. Determine threats to survival and possible mitigation efforts.

Background: Redband trout are depressed in some areas of the basin. Some populationshave been isolated due to dams and obstructions. Redband trout are designated as "Federal Category 2 and State Sensitive, Vulnerable". As indicated in Hanson et.la. (1990) the Middle Fork Malheur, which includes Stinkingwater Creek, needs improvements on fish habitats, and an inventory of fish populations.

Milestones: Detmine the life history of bull trout and redband trout in the Middle Fork of the Malheur River and tributary. Determine the presence of hybrid or exotic species and if found, initiate a comprehensive genetic assessment via sampling of native redband and bull trout. Determine threats to the survival for all life stages of current populations. Identify mitigation components. Accomplishments: 1997 Summit Creek - 17 miles of stream survey. Fish Survey's conducted on Wolf Creek, East Fork Wolf Creek. 1998. Spawning surveys conducted on West Fork Big Meadow Creek, Lake Creek. Fish Survey's conducted on Crooked Creek and McKoy Creek; bull trout found on Crooked Creek (bull trout are considered "not present" in this drainage). 30 miles of stream survey on Wolf Creek and East Fork Creek. Thermograph data (FY97 and 98)

Results: None identified.
