About This Site

Welcome to the NCI Cancer Research Portfolio Web site. This Web site provides a structure for searching, organizing, and analyzing research supported by the National Cancer Institute by organ/cancer site and/or by broad area of scientific interest. The areas of scientific interest are identified in the Common Scientific Outline (CSO), a classification system created to provide a common approach to comparing and assessing cancer research supported by different funding organizations. The CSO categories include:

  • Biology
  • Etiology (causes of cancer)
  • Prevention
  • Early detection, diagnosis, and prognosis
  • Treatment
  • Cancer control, survivorship, and outcomes research
  • Scientific model systems.

You can browse and explore active (FY 2002) NCI-supported research, including extramural and intramural projects, by Type of Cancer or by Type of Cancer Research. Search results include listings showing the number of projects by disease/organ site category, number of projects organized by CSO term, and number of projects organized by CSO categories for a specific disease/organ site. Selecting a specific result provides a list of all underlying NCI projects and links to the project abstracts. The advanced search function allows you to search the entire NCI research portfolio by additional categories including state, institution, funding mechanism, and year.

NCI Research Portfolio content is updated periodically throughout the year. To check back often, please add the Cancer Research Portfolio (http://researchportfolio.cancer.gov) to your list of bookmarks.
