Ground Broken for New Village School

BALAD, Iraq, Aug. 16, 2004 — Logistics Support Area Anaconda-based soldiers joined local sheiks and community leaders to break ground for a new school in Al Albin near Balad Aug. 16, according to Multinational Force Iraq officials.

The 226th Medical Logistics Battalion from Miesau, Germany, is sponsoring the construction of the new school, which will be built from the ground up.

The elementary school is expected to be ready for the start of school in mid-September.

The Army provided the approximately $60,000 for construction, but the planning and work will be done by members of the community and local contractors.

The school is one of more than 30 local infrastructure and water projects being managed by the 13th Corps Support Command civil affairs staff.

Since January, nearly $4 million has been spent to improve local schools, clinics and irrigation systems in the areas surrounding Logistics Support Area Anaconda.
