Joint Iraqi Operation Shuts Down Explosives Facility

BAGHDAD, Iraq, July 28, 2004 - The Iraqi National Guard and Iraqi Police Service discovered an enemy weapons cache in a home near Ad Dujayl roughly 40 miles north of Baghdad July 28, according to Office of Security Transition officials. The joint raid resulted from a tip received during a counter-hijacking patrol in the area.

The operation yielded multiple quantities of enemy weapons including 10 type-63 107mm rockets, two 120mm mortar rounds, a rocket propelled grenade launcher, two rocket propelled grenades, various fuses and 26 improvised explosive devise switches.

Acting on intelligence that an improvised explosive devise

manufacturer occupied a local home, the guard and police units conducted a “hasty raid” on the home, discovering the cache. A patrol from the 1st Infantry Division’s 2nd Battalion returned later with the Iraqi National Guard unit for an additional search. There was no one in the house in either search.

Bloody clothing was also discovered in the home.

Additional searches for buried munitions are under way.
