Bremer Releases Details on Iraq Security Programs
By U.S. State Department Washington File

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2004 — Under new de-Ba'athification procedures, thousands of teachers who were Ba'ath Party members in name only will be able to return to work and thousands more will begin to receive pensions this week, according to Ambassador Paul Bremer.

Bremer, administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority, released six fact sheets dealing with various Iraq security issues April 29.

The fact sheet on detainees notes that the names of all persons detained by coalition forces in Iraq are now published daily in Arabic on the Coalition Provisional Authority website and, beginning May 10, will be posted at police stations and courthouses across that country. The fact sheet states that 75 percent of all persons detained have already been released and all new detainees will have their cases reviewed by an attorney within 72 hours, with the highest reviewing priority going to female detainees.

According to the fact sheet on reconstruction, the coalition has so far completed over 20,000 reconstruction projects

employing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and will finance thousands of additional projects through more than $19 billion provided by the United States. Iraqi firms will be given priority in heading the new projects, which will create over a million and a half jobs for Iraqis next year.

Another fact sheet details plans to establish a National Commission for Remembrance to consider proposals from Iraqis "on how best to memorialize the suffering of Iraq's many communities under Saddam."

Fact sheets on security forces recruitment, border crossing security, detainees, reconstruction, de-Ba'athification, and the Remembrance Commission can be found at: http://www.defendamerica.mil/articles/apr2004/a043004c.html
