SAMARRA, Iraq – Control of the former Civil Military Operations Center compound in the city of Samarra, Iraq, was officially turned over to the local city council July 1.

During a ceremony marking the transfer, Lt. Col. Kirk T. Allen, commander of Task Force 1-26, turned over the key to the compound to Tariq Kamel Uwayyed, mayor of Samarra.

The transfer was greeted with joyous reaction from Samarra residents. Numerous Iraqi flags flew throughout the military compound.

Officials said the ceremony is an example of the transfer of sovereignty from the Multinational Forces to the Iraqi people and their legitimate Iraqi government leadership. Although Multinational Forces officially handed over control of the compound to the Iraqis, U.S. Soldiers are still committed to the region.

Allen assured Mayor Tariq that Multinational Forces will remain committed to helping the people of Samarra rebuild the city’s infrastructure.
