On May 18, 2001, President Bush signed Executive Order 13212 (Actions to Expedite Energy-Related Projects). As recommended by the National Energy Policy Development Group, the Executive Order established an interagency task force headed by the Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). The Task Force's primary mission is to "work with and monitor Federal Agencies' efforts to expedite their review of permits or take other actions as necessary to accelerate the completion of energy-related permits, while maintaining safety, public health, and environmental protections." The Task Force is comprised of CEQ staff members and Agency experts from the Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, Department of Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Pursuant to the Executive Order, the Task Force is housed at the Department of Energy (DOE) for administrative purposes. DOE also provides all logistic, administrative, and other support as needed. The Task Force was originally chartered until October 31, 2002. The charter has now been extended to January 20, 2005, unless amended. |
