Following
Kenya’s successful democratic transition in December 2002, USTDA has
sought to reinforce the new government’s reforms and to support U.S.
investment in this important economy. Having deployed multi-sector
definitional missions, USTDA is now reviewing activity proposals in
the environmental, energy, transportation, information and
communications technology, and health care sectors.
Recently, USTDA
approved funding for three key activities in Kenya. To assist with
tax transparency, revenue collection, and overall government
modernization, USTDA is providing technical assistance to the Kenya
Revenue Authority to design an integrated tax system. USTDA is also
financing assistance to Kenyatta National Hospital, one of the
largest hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa, to develop a strategic plan
for internal resource management and upgrading its infrastructure.
To support
Kenya’s domestic and regional energy strategy, USTDA will host an
orientation visit for senior delegates from Kenya, Tanzania, and
Zambia. The visit will provide the delegation with the opportunity
to review U.S. regulatory and commercial opportunities for their
regional power interconnector project, a $560 million endeavor.
These
activities offer immediate opportunities for U.S. companies to
participate in project development work in Kenya. Through a
definitional mission to Kenya and Tanzania that USTDA is
commissioning this fall, U.S. companies can look forward to more
USTDA-funded opportunities to work in Kenya in the transportation
sector, including port security, port and rail infrastructure, and
customs and border infrastructure.
