India's Market Opportunities Made Known to U.S. Companies

TDA continues to move forward with a robust Orientation Visit schedule and feasibility study investments for India, bringing exciting new project opportunities home to U.S. industry. Since President Clinton's visit to India in March, TDA has invested in 6 studies covering a mix of public and private sector projects in energy, telecommunications, environment, manufacturing, and transportation.

Following on the heels of the successful July 4-11 Indian Civil Aviation Orientation Visit, TDA recently hosted a telecommunications sector delegation. From August 18-30, senior delegates from the Department of Telecommunications along with the government-owned carrier MTNL visited Washington, DC, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay Area to discuss over $37 billion in new investments that will be made in India over the next five years in this sector.

As India encourages private sector participation and competition in the telecommunications marketplace, there are increasing opportunities for partnerships in the development of CDMA and wireless local loop, basic telephony and cellular services, satellite communications, and IMT-2000 services, among other areas of common interest. Two Business Briefings, including one in Washington, DC, on August 22 and a second in San Jose on August 30, were held to reach out to U.S. industry.
