USTDA GRANT SUPPORTS PILOT WIND FARM PROJECT IN BULGARIA
FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
SOFIA, BULGARIA ( June
21, 2004)
– Earlier today, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA)
awarded a $384,531 grant to the Municipality of Karlovo in Bulgaria
to co-fund a feasibility study on a municipal pilot wind farm
project. Electrotek Concepts of Richmond, Virginia will perform the
study and implement the pilot project in cooperation with General
Electric Wind Energy, LLC of Atlanta, Georgia.
The grant represents USTDA’s
commitment to assist the Municipality with its plans to expand
energy production and to introduce renewable sources of energy in
Bulgaria.
The grant was conferred in a
signing ceremony at the American Center at the U.S. Embassy in
Sofia. Ambassador James Pardew, U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria, signed
the grant on behalf of the U.S. Government. Mayor Emil Kabaivanov
signed on behalf of the Municipality of Karlovo.
The pilot project
seeks to introduce the first commercial wind farm to Bulgaria, and
to provide a case study demonstrating that wind power is an
economically viable source of energy. The USTDA-funded feasibility
study will define a wind farm model that can be replicated elsewhere
in Bulgaria.
The U.S. Trade and
Development Agency advances economic development and U.S. commercial
interests in developing and middle-income countries. The agency
funds various forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies,
training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the
development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading
environment. USTDA’s strategic use of foreign assistance funds to
support sound investment policy and decision-making in host
countries creates an enabling environment for trade, investment and
sustainable economic development. In carrying out its mission,
USTDA gives emphasis to economic sectors that may benefit from U.S.
exports of goods and services.
