USTDA TO AWARD ENERGY SAVING GRANT
IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
MEDIA
ADVISORY
PRAGUE (June 24, 2004) – The
U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) announces plans to award a
$175,000 grant to Teplarna Otrokovice a.s., a private Czech firm, to
partially fund a feasibility study on a proposed waste heat recovery
project in Otrokovice, Czech Republic. The USTDA grant is an
example of the agency’s commitment to support Czech efforts to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The grant will be conferred in a
signing ceremony on June 29, 2004, at 2:15 PM. The event will take
place at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence.
The Honorable William J. Cabaniss Jr., U.S. Ambassador to the Czech
Republic, will sign the grant agreement on behalf of the U.S.
Government. Mr. Frantisek Foltyn, CEO and Chairman of the Board,
will sign on behalf of Teplarna Otrokovice a.s. USTDA Regional
Director for Europe Ned Cabot and Mr. Miroslav Tvrznik, Member of
the Board of Teplarna Otrokovice, will attend the signing ceremony.
Teplarna Otrokovice is planning to
construct a waste heat recovery system of hybrid absorption pumps at
its heat generation plant. These absorption pumps would recapture
waste heat that is currently being released from cooling towers into
the atmosphere and concentrate it to the point that it can be
delivered as heat energy to customers. This project would increase
the plant’s overall efficiency and the amount of heat available for
public consumption, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The USTDA-funded feasibility study
will determine the economic and technical feasibility of the
proposed waste heat recovery system. The U.S. contractor that is
selected to perform the study will provide assessments of heat
demand, fuel availability, technologies, environmental impact and
infrastructure impact. The contractor will also provide a plant
conceptual design and cost estimate. In addition to the USTDA
grant, Teplarna Otrokovice a.s. will contribute labor and materials
toward the completion of the study.
The U.S. Trade and Development
Agency advances economic development and U.S. commercial interests
in developing and middle-income countries. The agency funds various
forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies, training,
orientation visits and business workshops that support the
development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading
environment. USTDA’s strategic use of foreign assistance funds to
support sound investment policy and decision-making in host
countries creates an enabling environment for trade, investment and
sustainable economic development. In carrying out its mission,
USTDA gives emphasis to economic sectors that may benefit from U.S.
exports of goods and services.
