For Immediate Release

Warsaw, Poland - (December 23, 2002) Earlier today, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a $418,398 grant to Heat and Power Associates Polska Sp.z.o.o (HPA) for a feasibility study on modernization of a combined heat and power plant (CHP) in Torun, Poland. The U.S. Embassy in Warsaw's Commercial Counselor, Edgar Fulton, signed the grant agreement on behalf of the U.S. Government and USTDA. Ms. Agnieszka Michalowska-Kacprzyk, Plenipotentiary, signed on behalf of HPA.

The USTDA-funded study will determine the most cost effective option for modernizing the CHP. HPA is in the late stages of acquiring the CHP plant in Torun, Poland. The study will provide economic and engineering analysis on whether to switch the existing turbine over to gas, install one new gas turbine or install two new gas turbines. The engineering analysis will include an environmental impact assessment and detailed design. CJ Aron Associates, Inc. of New York, NY will provide a cost share of $160,019 and perform the feasibility study.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation in developing and middle-income countries, with special emphasis on economic sectors that represent significant U.S. export potential. By funding various forms of technical assistance, training grants, feasibility and specialized studies, conferences, orientation visits, and business workshops, USTDA helps American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. Government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world. Since 1990, USTDA has provided more than $25 million in grant assistance to Poland, more than USTDA has provided for any other country in Central and Southeastern Europe.
