TDA CONNECTS U.S. BUSINESSES WITH ASIAN PROJECT SPONSORS

For Immediate Release

Bangkok, Thailand - (October 22, 2001) The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) announced the success of the "Healthcare in Asia: New Technologies, New Options" Conference held in Bangkok this week. Approximately thirty representatives of U.S. companies with expertise in the healthcare information technology (HCIT) industry traveled to Thailand to foster relationships and pursue high priority projects in seven Asian countries.

TDA General Counsel, Leocadia Zak, opened the Plenary Session stating, "This conference is extremely important in the wake of the September 11th events. TDA is committed to -- and continues fostering -- business relationships between U.S. companies and foreign project sponsors, particularly in the Asia Region." Ms. Zak further noted, "strong conference participation of both the American business community and project representatives from China including Hong Kong SAR, India, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, is indicative of our combined commitment to work together for successful implementation of HCIT projects. These opportunities will benefit the population of these countries while stimulating economic growth worldwide."

The Conference highlighted more than twenty-five projects with a total forecasted business potential of over $200 million in goods and services open for U.S. competition. TDA conferences offer an intimate forum for foreign project sponsors to meet one-on-one with American businesses to highlight industry expertise and provide viable solutions to implement these projects.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation by helping U.S. companies pursue business opportunities in developing and middle income countries. Through the funding of feasibility studies, orientation visits, specialized training grants, business workshops, and various forms of technical assistance, we help American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world.
