U.S. TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT AGENCY SPONSORS CONFERENCE ON MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN LATIN AMERICAN AND THE CARIBBEAN

For Immediate Release

Arlington, VA - (October 17, 2001) The United States Trade and Development Agency (TDA) will hold a conference to highlight transportation, environmental, and information technology projects financed by Multilateral Development Banks, including the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Andean Development Corporation. Key project decision makers will participate in the conference, to be held in Washington, D.C. in March 2002, which will also feature TDA's trademark "one-on-one" meetings.

The conference will feature sixty projects that represent near-term export opportunities for U.S. companies, with an estimated total value of about $1 billion. Up-to-date project status, procurement needs, and project contacts will be researched and profiled in a briefing book to be presented at the conference. Representatives of Latin American government executing agencies and bank officials will present projects and will be available to meet privately one-on-one with U.S. companies, allowing U.S. firms the opportunity to introduce their products and services directly to the principal decision makers.

Attending TDA-sponsored conferences is another way U.S. companies can make their capabilities known to foreign procurement officials. TDA conferences bring together U.S. engineers, developers, consultants, contractors, financiers, manufacturers and suppliers. They are geared toward providing details on major multi-million dollar project opportunities in specific regions of the world, typically covering one or more industry sectors.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation in major projects by helping U.S. companies pursue business opportunities in developing and middle income countries. Through the funding of feasibility studies, orientation visits, specialized training grants, business workshops, and various forms of technical assistance, TDA helps American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world.
