TDA SPONSORS ORIENTATION VISIT FOR OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH OFFICIALS FROM THAILAND

For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - (October 3, 2002) The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) will sponsor an Orientation Visit (OV) to the United States for six officials from the Department of Labor and Industry in Thailand responsible for developing the new safety, health, and working environment standards in Thailand. The delegation's visit will take place October 7-16, 2002.

The Royal Thai Government (RTG) is currently overhauling its occupational and health regulations, which have been in place since 1972. The RTG has developed a draft Safety Bill to be the national master law on occupational safety, health and environment, and is considering standards utilized in the United States and Europe. The Government's choice will impact equipment purchases and market share for this sector in Thailand, which is estimated to be over $60 million. During their visit, the OV delegates seek to observe trends in safety and prevention technologies in two main categories:

  • Security Equipment -- including access control systems, alarms, sensors, surveillance, and detection systems.
  • Safety Equipment -- including automatic fire protection and suppression systems, safety apparatus, and personal protection gear such as ear guards, eye goggles, and face masks.

During the OV, the delegation will attend the National Safety Council's annual meeting in San Diego, California. The delegation will also travel to Minnesota to visit Minneapolis-St. Paul area businesses and organizations involved in occupational safety and health. In addition, the delegation will meet with U.S. Government representatives in Washington, D.C., to learn about occupational safety and health standards, regulations, enforcement and compliance issues.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation in developing and middle-income countries, with special emphasis on economic sectors that represent significant U.S. export potential. By funding various forms of technical assistance, training grants, feasibility studies, conferences, orientation visits, and business workshops, TDA helps American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world.
