TDA AWARDS GRANT TO STRENGTHEN THE TELECOM REGULATORY FRAMEWORK IN EL SALVADOR

For Immediate Release

SAN SALVADOR - (September 11, 2002) Yesterday, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) awarded a $293,000 grant to the Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecomunicaciones (SIGET) for technical assistance to help strengthen the telecommunications regulatory framework in El Salvador. Representing the U.S. Government, U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Rose Likins signed the agreement on behalf of TDA at a ceremony held at the U.S. Embassy. Superintendent José Luis Trigueros signed the agreement on behalf of SIGET.

The TDA-funded technical assistance will focus on interconnection, anticompetitive practices, and consumer protection. It will result in recommendations regarding specific actions that may be undertaken to create a more vibrant telecommunications market in El Salvador by strengthening the existing legal and regulatory framework, in particular, by combating anticompetitive practices, increasing transparency, and promoting cost-oriented pricing principles.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation in developing and middle-income countries, with special emphasis on economic sectors that represent significant U.S. export potential. By funding various forms of technical assistance, training grants, feasibility studies, orientation visits, and business workshops, TDA helps American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world.
