TDA EXPANDS ASSISTANCE FOR DA NANG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

For Immediate Release

HANOI, VIETNAM - (September 30, 2002) Earlier today, TDA provided an additional $183,000 to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) to expand the level of assistance TDA is providing for a feasibility study on the construction of a new terminal at Da Nang International Airport. The U.S. Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Raymond F. Burghardt, signed the grant on behalf of the U.S. Government and TDA. Mr. Nguyen Tien Sam, Director General, signed on behalf of the CAAV.

One of three civilian airports in Vietnam, the Da Nang International Airport is the principle facility servicing domestic and international traffic in the country's central region. Its current terminal will not be able to meet the 22 percent annual growth in air traffic that is forecasted over the next 10 years.

In December 2000, TDA provided the CAAV with a $579,700 grant to partially fund a feasibility study evaluating historical passenger traffic, plans for tourism infrastructure development and forecasts for future operations at the Da Nang International Airport. The study developed project planning requirements, including space and facility requirements, an environmental review and conceptual designs. PricewaterhouseCoopers Securities LLC of McLean, Virginia, carried out the study and contributed additional resources towards its completion.

The additional $183,000 grant provided today will be used for in-depth financial analysis and the preparation of credit memoranda for lending institutions. The goal of this assistance is to provide the Government of Vietnam with the most competitive financing arrangement for this airport development project.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency promotes American private sector participation in developing and middle-income countries, with special emphasis on economic sectors that represent significant U.S. export potential. By funding various forms of technical assistance, training grants, feasibility studies, conferences, orientation visits, and business workshops, TDA helps American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world.
