TDA to Provide Feasibility Study Assistance
For Coal-Fired Power Project in Santa Catarina, Brazil
For Immediate Release
Washington, DC (26 July 1999) - The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) today awarded a
$214,150 grant to Brazil for a feasibility study on a coal-fired power project in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The grant was signed at
a ceremony in Florianopolis, which was attended by TDA Project Analyst Sally Roever, U.S. Commercial Officer Julia Rauner, Director
of Carbonífera Criciúma Alfredo Flavio Gazzola, and Director of Carbonífera Metropolitana Claudio Wasniewiski.
Because state and federal officials throughout Brazil are faced with a growing demand for energy, increasing the availability of
reliable power is a top priority for the country. As part of meeting this goal, Brazil is committed to developing alternatives
to hydroelectric power. This TDA-funded feasibility study will provide a master plan for a mine-mouth coal-fired power project
in Santa Catarina, a project jointly sponsored by Carbonífera Criciúma S/A and Carbonífera Metropolitana S/A.
The joint venture formed by the two companies will develop a mine-mouth power plant to burn locally-available, low-grade coal to
provide additional cost-effective energy to surrounding areas. Parsons Energy & Chemicals Group of Pennsylvania will perform the
study and contribute $35,850 toward completing the terms of reference.
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency, an independent agency of the U.S. Government, helps form mutually beneficial partnerships
between U.S. private sector companies and overseas project sponsors. Last year, TDA provided assistance in 62 nations around the
world, and invested over $3.1 million in Brazil.
