TDA Grant for Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Project Awarded in Bangkok

For Immediate Release

Bangkok, Thailand- (June 1, 2000) The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) today awarded a grant of $320,000 to the New Bangkok International Airport Company (NBIAC) to fund a feasibility study on upgrading equipment for the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) project in Thailand. The grant was signed by U.S. Embassy Commercial Counselor Karen Ware and Mr. Phojana Simasthien, Executive Vice President of NBIAC during a ceremony at the NBIAC headquarters in Bangkok.

The Second Bangkok International Airport (SBIA) is a $3.9 billion project that is approaching terminal and facility construction stages. TDA Deputy Regional Director John Herrman met with the NBIAC and determined that the project is a high priority. The Federal Aviation Administration has also confirmed that the proposal sounds reasonable in both concept and budget amount. SBIA's high projected traffic volume puts it among the world's busiest airports. NBIAC is the project sponsor, and is concerned that the conceptual design documents for ARFF be up-to-date. They requested TDA grant assistance to update the conceptual design and to specify ARFF vehicle and equipment requirements to guarantee that the most current and appropriate technology is used.

TDA Director J. Joseph Grandmaison remarked, "TDA is pleased to continue its assistance for the development of the world class Second Bangkok International Airport. U.S. companies have a great interest in this project."

NBIAC has budgeted over $27 million for the implementation of a system that includes construction and provisioning of a central fire station/headquarters facility, two satellite stations to ensure rapid response and an on-site training facility. The total U.S. export content is approximately $20 million, including emergency and fire fighting rolling stock, training simulators, diverse fire fighting equipment, chemicals and technical services. Furthermore, the proposed ARFF facility could serve as a regional training facility, in which case an additional $16.5 million in U.S. exports could be generated for the procurement of training simulators and related equipment.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency, an agency of the U.S. Government, helps form mutually beneficial partnerships between U.S. private sector companies and overseas project sponsors. Last year, TDA provided assistance in 67 nations around the world.
