U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Peter Tufo Announces $250,000 TDA Grant to Help with Ferihegy Airport Improvement Project

For Immediate Release

Washington, DC (25 June 1999) - The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) announced that it will award a $250,000 grant to the Hungarian Ministry of Transport, Communications and Water Management for a feasibility study on the development of Budapest's Ferihegy Airport as a regional hub. The grant will be signed in a ceremony today by the U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Peter Tufo and Dr. Sandor Gyurkovics, Administrative State Secretary.

"This TDA grant will serve the strategic purpose of introducing U.S. solutions to the Hungarian civil aviation authorities and airport planners," said TDA Director J. Joseph Grandmaison.

Over the last ten years, Hungary has invested in several projects to modernize Ferihegy in an effort to better serve the burgeoning travel needs of the country and region. Malev, the national air carrier, is committed to establishing itself as a competitive European airline and the development of this airport is crucial to meeting that need. This feasibility study will assess the airport's functionality, review the Hungarian airline and its air cargo traffic flows, and recommend opportunities for improvements.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency, an agency of the U.S. Government, helps form mutually beneficial relationships between U.S. private sector companies and overseas project sponsors. Last year, TDA provided assistance in 62 nations around the world.
