TDA to Host Malaysian Education Delegation on a Three-State Tour of U.S. Technology Providers

For Immediate Release

Washington, DC - (March 29, 2000) From April 2-13, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) will host a delegation of 19 leaders from the Malaysian technical and vocational training sector. The Malaysian representatives will tour the United States to meet with American technology suppliers and service providers regarding upcoming education projects in Malaysian with an estimated procurement value of $510.9 million. This TDA-sponsored reverse trade mission will stop in California, Utah and the Washington, D.C. area.

"Global applications for U.S. technology continue to grow at a rapid pace," said TDA Director J. Joseph Grandmaison. "TDA is pleased to host this Malaysian delegation to introduce them to the very best of American educational equipment and solutions."

With limited space in the country's universities, approximately 80 percent of Malaysia's high school graduates are continuing their education at technical and vocational institutions or private colleges. To accommodate this growing demand, the Malaysian government is eager to increase capacity, particularly in high-growth areas such as information technology.

The visiting delegation is comprised of public and private sector officials. In Silicon Valley, they will meet with technology companies such as 3Com Corporation, Apple Computers, Inc., New Horizons and Cisco Systems to learn about American hardware, software and IT solutions for technical training. In Salt Lake City, the delegation will meet with I-Sim Corporation, a leading developer of driver training technology, and Jason Associates Corporation, a manufacturer of crane training equipment. The delegation will also meet with the Western Governors University to discuss distance learning courses and attend the International Technology Education Association's 62nd Annual Conference. While in the Washington, D.C. area, the delegation will meet with a variety of consulting firms and technology providers including KPMG Consulting, Learning Stream, Blackboard, Inc. and WorldClass Consortium. On April 12th, TDA will host a one-day business briefing in Herndon, Va., where attending U.S. companies can meet with the delegation to discuss their upcoming procurement needs.
