Workplace Violence: Evaluation and Awareness/Intervention Training

The Center for Human Reliability Studies (CHRS) is researching and evaluating violent workplace incidents for several offices and contractors within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This activity encompasses a broad range of areas: early identification, assessment, intervention, referral, and follow-up of violent occurrences in the workplace, as well as psychological evaluations, assessment, and requirements needed in DOE human reliability programs. CHRS has conducted two surveys of workplace violence in DOE facilities to establish a current inventory of such events.

CHRS has developed examples of workplace violence policies for use by other institutions and corporations in policy development. These provide a brief background on the problem of workplace violence, a policy statement, elements to include in developing a workplace violence prevention program, responsibility statements, and references. In addition, CHRS works directly with the responsible institutional and corporate elements in developing, presenting or training presenters, and evaluating site-specific workplace violence training.

CHRS has also delivered a "Violence in the Workplace" orientation to more than 1,600 employees of DOE and its contractors. The seminar emphasizes increased awareness of potentially harmful behavior including: types of violence, contributing factors, warning signs, and preventive measures. CHRS continues to work with DOE and its contractors in early detection and prevention of violent behavior among the DOE workforce.
