Women's Health Information from FDA's Centers

Asian Pacific Islanders Women's Health

A multi-lingual site offering several languages to help Asian Pacific Islander women understand the importance of having mammograms and pap smears at regular intervals. Maintained by the FDA Los Angeles District Office.

Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER)

The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research is America's consumer watchdog for medicine. Its best-known job is to evaluate new drugs for safety and effectiveness before they can be sold. The center also:

  1. watches for drug problems once a drug is approved for sale,
  2. monitors drug information and advertising to make sure it is accurate and complete,
  3. protects drug quality and set manufacturing standards and
  4. conducts applied research focusing on laboratory research and testing.

Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)

CFSAN is one of six centers within FDA. With a work force of about 800, the center promotes and protects the public health and economic interest by ensuring that:

  • Food is safe, nutritious and wholesome, and cosmetics are safe.
  • Food and cosmetics are honestly, accurately and informatively labeled.

To achieve these goals, the center strives to be a leader in food safety, protect consumers from economic fraud, promote sound nutrition, and encourage innovation. The center is divided into several offices dealing with:

  • cosmetics and colors
  • food labeling
  • plant and dairy foods and beverages
  • premarket approval
  • seafood
  • special nutritionals, such as dietary supplements and infant formula.

Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)

The mission of CDRH is to protect public health by providing reasonable assurance of the safety and effectiveness of medical devices, and by eliminating unnecessary human exposure to radiation emitted from electronic products.

Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER)

CDER is responsible for the safety and effectiveness of biologic products including blood products, vaccines, therapeutics, tissues, monoclonal antibodies, biotechnology-derived products, somatic cell and gene therapy, and in vitro diagnosis and medical devices.
