What is a generic medicine?

A "generic" contains the same medicine as the brand name medicine.

• Generic medicine: ibuprofen
• Brand names: Advil TM , Motrin TM , Nuprin TM

Is there any difference between a generic and the brand name product?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)--which regulates generic medicines--makes sure a generic is proven to work the same as the brand name medicine. One difference: generic medicines are less expensive than brand name medicines.

Are there generics for all brand name medicines?

No. Many brand name medicines have generics, but not all.

How can I find out if a generic is available for the brand name medicine that I take?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
