Air Force Soars To Win 2004 Armed Forces Cross Country Championships. By Steve Brown With the course under a thick blanket of snow, the Air Force Cross Country runners blazed a path to win the 2004 Armed Forces Cross Country Championship, conducted as part of USA Track & Field's National Winter Classic, 7-8 February, Indianapolis , Indiana . The Armed Forces Champion is determined by adding the raw times of the top two men in the short (4K) course, the top three women in the long (8K) course, and the top three men in the long (12K) course. On the first day of the competition, Army Sergeant Sandu Rebenciuc of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) ( Fort Carson , Colo. ) finished seventh overall (first for the Armed Forces event) with a time of 11:28 . He was followed closely by his teammate Lieutenant Ryan Kirkpatrick ( Fort Carson , Colo. ) with a time of 11:48 and Los Angeles Air Force Base's Captain Nicholas MacFalls (11:49). Lieutenant Levi Severson, Hanscom Air Force Base, finished sixth in the Armed Forces Championship with a time of 12:13 . The second event of the day saw Lieutenant Lara Coppinger (Edwards Air Force Base) and Lieutenant Elissa Ballas (Fort Sam Houston) finish first and second respectively in the Women's Long Course with times of 30:22 and 30:39. Navy Lieutentant Commander Kimberly Fagen, LCDR Captain Janet Urbanski's ( Fort Detrick , Maryland ) seventh place time of 32:23 rounded out the scoring for the Air Force Team. The final event of the championship was the Men's Long Course. The Navy's Lieutenant Jon Clemens (37:20) and Lieutenant John Mentzer (38:04) won the gold and silver medals, while the Marine Corps' Lieutenant Nathan Flores (38:55) won the bronze medal. Captain Robert Dickie (PACAF, Hickam Air Force Base) came in fourth in the Armed Forces event with a time of 49:00. Other scorers for the Air Force were Vance Air Force Base's Captain Daniel LeBoeuf (39:45) and Peterson Air Force Base's Lieutenant Colonel Michael Wasson, (39:58). The races were run on 4-5 inches of snow, with temperatures ranging from 25-30 degrees. All runners found themselves adjusting to the tough course conditions, particularly as the course crusted up from earlier events. Overall team totals for the Armed Forces Championships were Air Force 236 minutes and 9 seconds, Army 240:28, Marine Corps 241:32, and Navy 241:33. The top Armed Forces finishers of these races usually proceed to the International Military World Championship; however United States ' State Department restrictions preclude the United States from advancing to this 23-28 February in Beirut , Lebanon .
