Analysis of Performance: The XXXVI CISM Modern Pentathlon World Championship was a world-class competition on the order of a World Cup. Ten athletes from the 2004 Olympic Games were in attendance as well as a number of other internationally ranked athletes. The US team acquitted itself well, with every one contributing to the overall success. The highlight for the US team was winning the silver medal in the men's relay. After scores of 88 and 86 in the shooting event by Senior and Manske, Christie shot 95 to put the US team in 2 nd place. The team recorded 59 victories against 40 defeats in fencing to move into the overall lead after 2 events. All three men fenced well before entering the pool for the third event, swimming. 2:55.59 was less than a second slower than the winning swim time and good enough to hold onto the overall lead. Solid rides by Manske and Senior were followed by a flawless ride by Christie, giving the US men the second best riding score and a 23 second lead going into the run. Manske ran 1 st for the US men and handed off to Senior, still in first place. Senior stretched the lead a few seconds and gave the lead to anchor, SGT Christie. German Olympian, Eric Walther closed the gap on Christie with 200 meters to go. The two battled to the finish with Walther nipping Christie by less than a meter. Other notable performances were turned in when 1LT Senior won the running and finished within a second of the fastest swim time. 1LT Senior demonstrated, once again, that he is the best run-swim athlete in the world. SPC Kelly combined a perfect ride with a 4 th place running time to move into the top 10 after a shaky start in the shooting and fencing events. Tibbs Wins Silver Medal in the Men's Pentathlon. |
