Maj.
Gen. Wood heads one of the command's newest directorates,
known as J-9, designated in 1998 by Secretary of Defense
William Cohen to be the Department of Defense's executive
agent for joint experimentation.
Experimentation
is the military's primary method for exploring, testing
and validating warfighting ideas and concepts to transform
the way U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines fight
future battles.
J-9
integrates experimentation efforts of all the services
and unified commands. It is America's military transformation
laboratory.
Commissioned
following graduation from the U.S. Military Academy
at West Point, N.Y. in 1972, Maj. Gen. Wood has held
numerous assignments during his career, ranging from
platoon leader to commanding general of the 2nd Infantry
Division of the Eighth U.S. Army, Republic of South
Korea. He also served as a National Security Council
White House Fellow from 1984-85.
In
addition to a bachelor of science degree from the U.S.
Military Academy, Wood holds advanced degrees from
the University of Chicago and the U.S. Army Command
and General Staff College.
His
decorations include awards of the Legion of Merit,
the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal,
the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation
and Achievement Medals. He is also authorized to wear
the Parachutist Badges as well as the Ranger Tab.
