Reinvestment Options

Three Ways
To Reinvest:

  • On this web site

  • Via our automated, toll-free phone service

  • By paper and mail
Knowing how and when to reinvest the Treasury bills, notes, and bonds you hold with us isn't a matter of guesswork. We spell out the process for you step by step.

When you bid for a bill, you can schedule it for reinvestment. In fact, you can schedule it for multiple reinvestments, covering as long as two years.

If you own a fixed-principal note or bond, or if you own a bill that you didn't initially schedule for reinvestment, here's what happens . . .

About 45 days before your security is to mature, we mail you a Reinvest Direct Notice. The notice tells you this: when your security will mature, the securities into which you can reinvest, the methods you can use to reinvest, and the deadline for reinvesting (the deadline is 11 calendar days prior to maturity).

If you choose to reinvest, you have these options:

  • Reinvest all of the principal of your maturing security, or only part of the principal.

  • Reinvest by worldwide web, automated phone service, or paper and mail. If you choose to reinvest only a part of the principal, you must use paper and mail.

Partial Reinvestment

If you wish to reinvest only part of the principal of a maturing security, complete and submit Reinvestment Request (PD F 5180). You can download or order the form on the web or request it from your customer contact center.

Full Reinvestment

If you wish to reinvest the full principal of your maturing security, you can reinvest by any of three means: our web site, our automated phone system at 800-722-2678, or by filling in the bottom of your Reinvest Direct Notice and mailing it in.

Confirmation

If you reinvest by mail, we mail you a notice confirming we have processed and scheduled your reinvestment. Then, when we issue the security into which you're reinvesting, we mail you a Statement of Account. The account statement serves as a second confirmation of your reinvestment.

If you reinvest by web or phone, we mail you a Statement of Account when we issue your new security. The statement confirms your reinvestment.

Redemption Rather Than Reinvestment

If you want to redeem your security instead of reinvest it, you don't have to do anything. That is, if we don't hear from you by the reinvestment deadline (and the maturing security isn't a bill that you scheduled for automatic reinvestment), we'll redeem your security on the day it matures.

Cancellations & Revisions

You can cancel or change a reinvestment until 10 business days before your security matures. To take either of these actions, submit a request to us in any of three ways:

  • Write your customer contact center
  • Fax 304-480-7728
  • Phone 800-722-2678 and choose Option #5 for a customer service representative (available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, except holidays)

Your request must provide:

  • account name
  • account number
  • confirmation number (if you reinvested by web or phone)
  • par amount you scheduled for reinvestment

Final Points

  • You cannot reinvest TIPS. When they mature, we redeem them.

  • The security into which you reinvest usually won't have the same price or rate of return as your matured bill, note, or bond.
