Sell Direct ®

Want to sell a Treasury bill, note, bond, or TIPS? Papers & Calculator

We'll sell it for you, if you hold the security in an account with us.

Choose Sell Direct, and we'll obtain quotes from different brokers, sell at the highest price, and deposit the proceeds directly into your bank account. The process usually takes only a couple of days.

The Cost

You pay a very competitive fee -- only $34 for each security sold -- and you don't have to deal with a bank or broker.

The Process

Here's what you do:

  1. Complete a Sell Direct Request (PD F 5179-1). Your signature on this form must be certified. (Download or order Sell Direct Request.)

  2. Send the completed, signed, and certified form to:

        Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago
        Investment Division for Sell Direct
        230 S. LaSalle St.
        Chicago, IL 60604

FRB Chicago will sell your security in the secondary market. The bank obtains quotes from different brokers and sells at the highest price offered.

  3. The proceeds from the sale will be deposited directly into the bank account you designated to accept our payments.

  4. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago will send you a confirmation. You'll also receive the appropriate IRS 1099 form, as well as a Statement of Account showing the new balance in your account with us.
