Getting what you want from students.gov is easy! There are multiple ways to find the site(s) you're looking for. This guide has been created to aid in your search so that you can find what you need quickly. Browsing By Category: If you're not sure where to start, we recommend browsing our sites by topic. students.gov has eight topics designed with the student in mind. Each of the eight topics contains multiple categories, all of which provide a list of related web sites. For example, listed under the "Pay For Your Education" topic is the "Scholarships and Grants" category. By clicking that link, a list of sites will appear with information on scholarship opportunities. Displaying Links: Sites are displayed in the following order: Government (.gov), Military (.mil), Education (.edu), Organization (.org), and Commercial sites (.com). Within these categories, sites are arranged by popularity - referring to the total number times the site is visited. Keyword Search: If you know what you're looking for or aren't having any luck with browsing categories, the search tool on students.gov makes finding the sites you want easy. The Basics: To start your search, enter one or more descriptive keywords and hit the "Search" button to the right. The search tool matches your word(s) based on the site title, URL, description and relevant keywords. The students.gov search tool will attempt to match each of your submitted keywords, in no particular order, to appropriate sites. Displaying Results: Results are displayed in the following order: Government (.gov), Military (.mil), Education (.edu), Organization (.org), and Commercial sites (.com). Within these categories, sites are arranged by popularity - referring to the total number times the site is visited. Choosing Search Words: For the best search results, it's important to choose your search words wisely. Keep in mind these tips: Try obvious words - if you are looking for internships with a government agency, such as NASA, enter "NASA Internships". Don't use too many words - for example, entering "I am looking for financial aid in California" will produce no results. Instead, try "California Financial Aid". Leave unnecessary words out. Word variations can make a difference in your search.  If you enter "Agricultural", and the link contains only the word "Agriculture", that site won't appear. In most cases, we've attempted to compensate for various word forms. However, we suggest you enter the basic forms of words whenever possible. Advanced Tips: Typing in the words "AND" or "OR" will not affect your search. Do not use the word "NOT" to exclude words - this will be treated as a search keyword and likely not return any results. Do not use any special symbols - some examples are quotation marks (" "), plus (+) or minus (-) signs, stars (*) and apostrophes ( ' ). These will affect the outcome of your search and most likely not return any results. Use abbreviations sparingly, and avoid uncommon ones. If you're searching for information on the US Coast Guard, entering in "USCG" will show Coast Guard information.
