White House Says Iraq is Central Front in War on Terror

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters March 15 that Iraq is the central front in the global war on terrorism and that it is important for the coalition to work together to advance freedom and democracy in a very volatile part of the world.

"When we prevail in Iraq, we will have dealt the terrorists a significant blow. By advancing freedom and democracy in a dangerous part of the world, we are helping bring about a safer world for all people," McClellan said.

The press secretary noted that the United Nations had been helpful in Iraq and it will have an important role to play for the future of the Iraqi people.

When questioned about a March 15 statement made by Spanish Prime Minister-elect Jose Louis Rodriguez Zapatero that he would recall Spanish troops from Iraq by June 30 unless the U.N. assumes control of military operations in Iraq, McClellan said, "There is a strong coalition working together to help the Iraqi people realize a free, democratic, and prosperous future. It is important that we all work together to help the Iraqi people realize their aspirations.

"Terrorists are enemies of the civilized world and all civilized nations," the White House spokesman said. "That is why it is important for us to redouble our efforts and go after those terrorists before they could strike. By advancing freedom and democracy in Iraq, we are making the world a safer place."

PRESIDENT BUSH CONGRATULATES SPAIN'S PRESIDENT-ELECT

"The president called Spain's President-elect Zapatero to congratulate him on his March 14 electoral victory, the press secretary said.

"President Bush reiterated our solidarity with the Spanish people and said they were in our prayers during this difficult period.

"The two leaders both said they looked forward to working together particularly on our shared commitment to combat terrorism and the President-elect thanked President Bush for his phone call," McClellan said.

McClellan also discussed the March 11 terrorist attack in Madrid, "The attack in Madrid is a reminder that we are at war.

"This is a global war on terrorism," he said, adding, "there are no firm conclusions as to who was responsible for the attacks in Madrid."

"President Bush appreciates the President-elect's commitment to fighting terrorism, and spoke about advancing the strong relationship we have with Spain," McClellan said.

BUSH CONGRATULATES RUSSIAN PRESIDENT PUTIN ON HIS RE-ELECTION

"President Bush called Russia's President Vladimir Putin and congratulated him on being re-elected March 14," the press secretary said.

McClellan noted that President Bush emphasized President Putin's opportunity to deepen Russia's commitment to market based reform and democratic reform.

BUSH THANKS LATVIA'S PRESIDENT FREIBERGA FOR SUPPORT IN IRAQ

"The president thanked Latvia's President Vaira Vike-Freiberga for her leadership and Latvia's support in Iraq. President Bush said he also welcomed Latvia joining NATO soon," McClellan said.
