Obituary Information

State Magazine runs obituaries of State Department employees when their families or representatives request the service and provide the appropriate information. The magazine does not reprint obituaries from other publications. Instead, it follows a format focusing on the deceased’s direct ties with the Department. This includes the spouses of employees. The magazine does not accept obituaries over the phone or from well-intentioned colleagues unless they are representing the family’s wishes.

The following information is requested: the full name of the deceased (including any nick name they may have used); age at death; date and place of death; cause of death, if known (this information may be withheld); Foreign Service, Civil Service, Foreign Service National employee; year entered the service; year retired; any military service.

State Magazine also welcomes photos of the deceased and will return glossy prints to the person and address specified. Photos can be black and white or color and may be a group photo so long as the deceased is identifiable. They can also be digital images (at least 300 dots per square inch) e-mailed separately from the text in JPEG or TIF formats.

Please include a daytime phone number where you can be reached and the name and address of the person who should receive complimentary copies of the issue in which the obituary appears.
