NCI Conducts Peer Review Training Workshop for Advocates

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) successfully piloted a 3-day training workshop, Preparing Cancer Advocates to Participate in Grant Review, in Rockville, Maryland, on May 10-12, 2004. Twenty- four members of the Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities (CARRA) program participated in this pilot workshop. The purpose of the training was to prepare CARRA members to participate effectively in the NCI peer review process. The "Tips for Advocate Participation in NCI Peer Review" document below contains key points made about peer review during the training workshop. This document is provided here as a reference tool for all CARRA members who have questions about the peer review process. The second document below is the full evaluation report of the pilot training workshop. Due to the success of this pilot workshop, NCI plans to hold additional peer review training workshops for current CARRA members in the future.

NCI CARRA New Member Selection Process

Thanks to all who indicated their interest in the Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities (CARRA) program. The CARRA application and selection process for the 2004 - 2007 term has been completed, and a decision letter has been mailed to each person who submitted an application.

CARRA applications were carefully processed through a multi-step review. Initial screenings included checks for submission by the June 3, 2004 deadline; submission of all required components of the application packet; and eligibility for CARRA according to the published guidelines. Each on-time, complete, eligible application was then reviewed by two NCI staff members who have requested CARRA participation for their own programs, and one cancer advocate. The final step was considering those reviews in the context of disease site gaps in the current membership, as well as ensuring diversity across the CARRA membership.

The new CARRA term begins on October 1, 2004. The number of experienced and competent applicants in this round made it challenging to select a limited number of new CARRA members for the available openings. Applicants who could not be accepted in this round are encouraged to stay connected to information from the National Cancer Institute and to continue working in their communities. One way to stay current with cancer research advances is to subscribe to the NCI Cancer Bulletin, a weekly free e-publication, at http://www.cancer.gov/ncicancerbulletin. In addition, we encourage you to subscribe to the NCI Advocates E-News which comes out every other week with news tailored to the cancer advocacy community. Please visit the Office of Liaison Activities website at http://la.cancer.gov/listserv.html to learn how to subscribe.
