National Studies

  • Chafee Independent Living Evaluation Project: The goal of this 5 year project is to determine the effects of Independent Living Progams funded under the John Chafee Foster Care Independence Program (CFCIP) in achieving key outcomes for youth who are aging out of foster care. This project will identify and evaluate 4-6 ILP programs.

  • National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being: This study will follow a nationally representative sample of children who enter the child welfare system, assessing their social, emotional, cognitive, and functional status, as well as services needed and provided for children and their families.

  • Children of Color in the Child Welfare Systems: This ongoing research project was funded to review research examining the child welfare system's response to children of color, to identify programs and practices that address perceived racial or cultural disparities within the system, and to pilot intensive qualitative observational studies on policies and practices related to services for children of color in the child welfare system.

Other Studies

Consortia/Research Partnerships

  • Consortium for Longitudinal Studies of Child Maltreatment (Longscan): This five-site study will follow samples of children who are maltreated or at risk for maltreatment from the time the children are 4 years old until they reach adulthood. Interviews and assessments with children and parents are planned to occur every two years. Additional information about the Longscan projects, including site-level descriptions, measures, and contact information for participants, can be found at http://www.sph.unc.edu/iprc/longscan/

  • Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) Funded Research: (Coming Soon) CAPTA authorizes funds to provide information needed to better protect children from abuse or neglect and to improve the well-being of abused and neglected children. Investigator-initiated awards were granted to seven researchers in order to advance knowledge and practice in the child abuse and neglect field. Grant periods are for three years in each of the seven sites.

Other Related Research Resources

  • Foster Care and Adoption Statistics: This resource provides case level data representing children in foster care under the responsibility of State child welfare agencies and those children adopted with the involvement of those agencies. Data on other adoptions are submitted voluntarily by States.
