TVA in Alabama

Energy Sales – Fiscal Year 2003

  • Some 443,757 households located in 16 north Alabama counties bought more than 7.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from distributors of TVA power in fiscal year 2003.
  • More than 86,000 commercial and industrial customers in Alabama purchased approximately 8.6 billion kilowatt-hours from distributors of TVA power. In addition, distributors in Alabama sold approximately 185 million kilowatt-hours to outdoor lighting customers.
  • TVA provided 5.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity directly to 13 large industries and federally owned installations in Alabama.
  • TVA sold a total of 16.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to 17 municipal and eight cooperatively owned Alabama power companies.
  • TVA’s power revenues in Alabama were more than $954 million in 2003, or about 14 percent of all TVA power revenues.

Service Area

  • Municipal and cooperatively owned power companies in Alabama sell TVA electricity in the counties of Calhoun, Cherokee, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, and Winston.
  • The TVA service area in Alabama covers about 8,380 square miles.

Power Generation and Transmission

  • In Alabama, TVA operates three hydroelectric dams, two coal-fired generating plants, one nuclear power plant, and one combustion turbine site, with a combined generation capacity of more than 6,721 megawatts. The hydroelectric dams are Guntersville, Wheeler, and Wilson. The coal-fired plants are Widows Creek and Colbert, and the combustion turbine site is also at Colbert. The nuclear plant is Browns Ferry.
  • TVA operates two solar facilities in Alabama, a 30-kilowatt site at the Florence Water Treatment Facility in Florence and a 27-kilowatt facility at Sci-Quest science museum in Huntsville.
  • TVA owns and/or maintains 73 substations and switching stations and 2,498 circuit miles of transmission line in Alabama.

Land and Water Stewardship

  • TVA’s Guntersville, Wheeler, Wilson, and Pickwick Reservoirs are located in the northern tier of Alabama counties, and they have a combined surface area of 193,600 acres and more than 2,700 miles of shoreline.
  • TVA is responsible for managing more than 91,000 acres of land around these reservoirs and their tributaries.

Other TVA Operations

  • TVA’s Environmental Research and Technology Applications organization and TVA’s Public Power Institute are located in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. They work together to provide sustainable energy technologies for the public power industry that are environmentally sound and cost-effective.

Personnel

  • There are about 2,870 TVA employees in Alabama.
  • Alabama is home to more than 4,500 TVA retirees and their families.

Tax-Equivalent Payments

  • TVA paid $77,524,258 in lieu of taxes to the State of Alabama in 2003, based on power sales and power property values in the state.

Economic Development

  • Since 1995, TVA has invested more than $26.7 million in economic development loans for new and expanding industries in Alabama. These loans have helped create some 9,500 new jobs and leveraged an additional investment of more than $1.75 billion from public and private sources.

TVA Suppliers

  • TVA purchased $212.9 million in materials and services and $3.1 million in fossil fuel from Alabama vendors in fiscal year 2003, for a total of $216 million.
