TVA in Kentucky

Energy Sales – Fiscal Year 2003

  • In fiscal year 2003, TVA sold more than 7.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to 13 municipal and five cooperatively owned power companies in Kentucky.
  • Distributors of TVA power provided three billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to more than 219,000 households in 28 counties in western and central Kentucky.
  • Kentucky distributors of TVA power served more than 45,000 commercial and industrial customers in fiscal year 2003, with sales of more than four billion kilowatt-hours. In addition, distributors in Kentucky sold approximately 104 million kilowatt-hours to outdoor lighting customers.
  • TVA provided more than 12.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity directly to 17 large industries and federally owned installations in Kentucky in 2003.
  • TVA power revenues in Kentucky in 2003 totaled more than $681 million, or about 10 percent of all TVA power revenues.

Service Area

  • Distributors of TVA power serve all or a portion of the following counties in south central and western Kentucky: Adair, Allen, Barren, Butler, Caldwell, Calloway, Carlisle, Christian, Cumberland, Edmondson, Fulton, Graves, Grayson, Hickman, Lyon, Logan, Marshall, McCracken, McCreary, Metcalfe, Monroe, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Todd, Trigg, Simpson, Warren, and Whitley.
  • The TVA service area in Kentucky covers about 10,914 square miles.

Power Generation and Transmission

  • TVA operates one hydroelectric dam and two coal-fired power plants in Kentucky, with a combined generating capacity of more than 4,500 megawatts.
    • Coal-fired Plants: Paradise and Shawnee.
    • Hydroelectric Plant: Kentucky.
  • TVA operates a 36-kilowatt solar facility at Lovers Lane soccer complex in Bowling Green.
  • TVA owns and/or maintains 51 substations and switching stations and 1,793 circuit miles of transmission line in Kentucky.

Land and Water Stewardship

  • TVA’s Kentucky Reservoir in southwestern Kentucky has a surface area of 160,300 acres and more than 2,000 miles of shoreline.
  • TVA is responsible for managing more than 66,000 acres of land around Kentucky Reservoir and its tributaries.

Personnel

  • There are about 980 TVA employees in Kentucky.
  • Kentucky is home to more than 1,400 TVA retirees and their families.

Tax Equivalent Payments

  • TVA paid $26,389,103 in lieu of taxes to the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 2003, based on power sales and power property values in the state.

Economic Development

  • Since 1995, TVA has invested $17.5 million in economic development loans for new and expanding industries in Kentucky. These loans have helped create approximately 5,000 new jobs and leveraged more than $222 million in additional funding from public and private sources.

TVA Suppliers

  • TVA made purchases of $10.8 million in materials and services and $355.1 million in fossil fuel from Kentucky vendors in fiscal year 2003, for a total of $365.9 million.
